South African artist Trenton Birch, who was first featured on MIO a couple of years ago while still living abroad in London, has not wasted any time since returning to South Africa. In the last year or so, Trenton and his band Free Radical have been active on the Cape Town music scene, with initiatives such as the Breathe Sunshine Sessions, gigs aimed at raising awareness for the Breathe Sunshine Foundation, the brainchild of Trenton and his friend John Medupe.

For many years Colin Shapiro, one of SA's most successful composers and other concerned music makers, fought a long court battle with the South African Recording Rights Association Limited (SARRAL) for what he says was the association's mismanagement of its members' funds. After the legal fight, Shapiro finally won the case and in November 2009 SARRAL was eventually liquidated as a result of a ruling made by the Johannesburg High Court.
